PEFCs are electrochemical devices for direct chemical energy conversion turning it into electric energy through a reaction occurring between a fuel (hydrogen) and  an oxidant (air, oxygen). Such devices, thanks to their high efficiency and low environmental impact (low-emissions), are a valid alternative to the traditional power systems. The main goals of this technology are performance enhancement and cost reduction. They are pursued through optimising components, reducing dimensions, and making the system easier to be used with the various applications, such as stationary, transport, portable, aerospace, and maritime.
