CO2Fokus – CO2 utilisation focused on market relevant dimethyl ether production, via 3D printed reactor and solid oxide cell based technologies
Call/Topic: Conversion of captured CO2
Type of action: Research and Innovation Action
Granted by: Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA)
The project aims to produce a technology able to use the CO2 emitted by industrial processes as a raw material to produce dimethyl ether (DME), a gas often used in the chemical industry and usually obtained from fossil sources.
The project wants to play a relevant role to tackle climate change and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere, thanks to the use of CO2 in a new production process. The economic and environmental sustainability of the new developed technology is particularly important to encourage a fast spread among enterprises and thus contribute to the emissions reduction targets defined by the Paris agreements.
The project benefits are also linked to the several applications DME can have. Indeed, it can be used as a fuel in many processes where nowadays fossil fuels are employed, among which there is also transportation. This not only reduces the dependence from non-renewable resources, but the emissions derived from its combustion are less pollutant than classic fuels ones. Moreover, DME from CO2 is obtained from a direct transformation process instead of the current indirect one, allowing a consistent increase of efficiency.
Thanks to a multidisciplinary partnership, innovative technology reactors for DME production will be created. This technology will be tested in an industrial environment at partner Petkim’s plants to show the possibility to integrate it into already existent industrial plants and then to be spread in short-time among enterprises.
The CO2Fokus project is part of the Horizon 2020 Programme, it will last 42 months and sees the participation of 12 partners coming from 8 different countries.
